About Me
Hi! My name is Hui-Yuan Neo and I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Digital Ethics Center at Yale University.
I study comparative politics and specialize in authoritarianism, information control, and political economy, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. Broadly, my research uses mixed methods to examine the strategies employed by authoritarian regimes to regulate the flow of information and data in society. My work has been published in Pacific Affairs.
My work has been supported by the American Political Science Association, the Department of Education, Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, Cornell Center for Social Sciences, Cornell Southeast Asia Program, and the Cornell Graduate School. I was also a SEAREG Fellow in Winter 2024. I hold a B.A. with High Honors in Political Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a minor in History. I also earned my PhD in Government from Cornell University in 2025.
Outside of my research, I have written for Jom Media and have consulted for the World Bank out of the Malaysia Hub.
