About Me

Hi! My name is Hui-Yuan Neo and I am a PhD candidate in the Government Department at Cornell University. I study comparative politics and specialize in authoritarianism, information control, and political economy, with a regional focus on Southeast Asia. Broadly, my research uses mixed methods to examine the strategies employed by authoritarian regimes to regulate the flow of information and data in society.

My work has been supported by the American Political Science Association, the Department of Education, Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, Cornell Center for Social Sciences, Cornell Southeast Asian Program, and the Cornell Graduate School. I hold a BA with High Honors in Political Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Outside of my research, I am involved with the Society for Asian American Graduates Affairs (SAAGA) at Cornell and have consulted for the World Bank out of the Malaysia Hub.
